The Help

I finished The Help. It had been recommended to me by so many that I was excited to finally get time to read it. Thanks Tracy for lending me your copy. I liked it but the ending became a bit lame for me. I am such a realist that I have a hard time with endings. I want truth. I want people to be exposed for who they are and for circumstances to be what they are and not sugar coated or contrived. Hilly may have gotten her come-upings but not in a real sense, not where she was seen for who she was. I did like the way these care givers truly saw their children for who they were and did contribute to their sense of where they belonged in the world.

The story brought back memories of my Laura and the connections she had with Leslie who cleaned our house every other week. She looked forward to seeing her and always had made her a gift to say thank you for dusting her room. I don't think we can ever underestimate the influnce people have on us who are not a part of our family but are of our daily lives.

The book also remind me of a time in my childhood when my great aunt got on to me for not appreciating a black lady name Rose who helped my aunt around the house everyday. I can't remember what brought up the conversation, but I do remember that my aunt told me that no one should be looked down upon because of the color of their skin, that we are all a creation of God and given a soul. How different life could have been for many black people had others lived by my aunt's philosophy.

I would like to hear from anyone who has read The Help.
